{"id":176,"date":"2024-04-09T12:01:46","date_gmt":"2024-04-09T12:01:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bemjax.com\/blog\/?p=176"},"modified":"2024-04-09T12:18:29","modified_gmt":"2024-04-09T12:18:29","slug":"talking-to-dogs-like-they-are-children-matters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bemjax.com\/blog\/talking-to-dogs-like-they-are-children-matters\/","title":{"rendered":"Talking to dogs like they are children matters"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s42003-023-05217-y\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s42003-023-05217-y\">This study<\/a> provides the first neural evidence for dogs&#8217; heightened responsiveness for speech with <strong>exaggerated prosody<\/strong> (specifically to dog- and infant-directed speech (IDS) ) as compared to adult-directed speech (ADS), especially when spoken by women,&#8221; Dr. Anna G\u00e1bor, a study co-author and postdoctoral researcher at the Neuroethology of Communication Lab at E\u00f6tv\u00f6s Lor\u00e1nd University&#8217;s Department of Ethology.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Infants\u2019 behavioral and neural responses to addressee-specific speech prosody have already been widely investigated. In infant studies, natural IDS has been used as an acoustic stimulus. Compared to ADS, IDS has been characterized by heightened pitch, wider pitch range, greater pitch variability and more exaggerated vowels. The function of such addressing style is to make the child highly attentive and to enhance positive emotions during the interaction. This promotes secure bonding between participants, and also has a significant effect on infants\u2019 cognitive, social, and language development. Behavioral studies in infants indicate preference toward IDS over ADS. Interestingly, this preference is typically stronger for female speakers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\u00a0&#8220;Previous research has shown that dogs exhibit a behavioral preference for dog-directed speech.
